The Balke Cabin segment extends between the junction of FR 24 and FR 576 and a point (N 33.77244, W 109.30562) in Johns Canyon in the high country of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The alignment traverses cool alpine meadows and mixed-conifer forest along the Mogollon Rim, skirting the Blue Range country with broad views toward deep canyons and volcanic highlands. Notable points of interest include the historic Balke Cabin area (near Hannagan Meadow) and the nearby Blue Vista Overlook on the Coronado Trail, a day use viewpoint with sweeping vistas of the Blue Range.
This segment consists primarily of unpaved forest roads and OHV connectors—generally hard packed dirt with embedded rock, intermittent ruts and washboards, and occasional steep grades. Conditions can shift quickly after monsoon storms or spring snowmelt; high clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended.
