The Johns Canyon segment extends between a point (N 33.77244, W 109.30562) in Johns Canyon and the town of Alpine in the high country of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests at the junction of FR 275 and FR 851. The alignment threads mixed-conifer forest and open meadows on the White Mountains plateau, with broad vistas toward Escudilla Mountain and surrounding volcanic highlands.

This segment consists entirely of unpaved forest roads and OHV connectors with hard-packed dirt, embedded rock, seasonal ruts, and occasional washboards. Grades vary, and conditions can change quickly after summer storms or spring melt; high-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended.

Safety note

This is a high-elevation corridor with rapidly changing weather — expect afternoon monsoon storms in summer and snow/ice in winter. Cell coverage is limited; carry maps/GPS, emergency supplies, and be self-sufficient.
