The Tonto Basin segment extends between Jakes Corner and Tonto Basin along SR 188 in Gila County from the junction of FR 184 and SR 188 to the junction of SR 188 and FR 71. The alignment follows the Tonto Creek corridor through wide desert basin and riparian flats, with open views east toward the Sierra Ancha and west toward the Mazatzal Mountains and Mount Ord.
This segment consists entirely of paved highway. Expect highway speeds, limited shoulders in places, and light-to-moderate local traffic, plus blowing dust after dry, windy periods.

Services are available at both ends. Jakes Corner offers food and limited services. Tonto Basin provides fuel, groceries, dining, lodging/RV parks, and quick access south to Roosevelt Lake for boating, fishing, and camping.
Safety note
This lower-elevation corridor can experience extreme summer heat and monsoon-related flooding in adjacent washes. Watch for wildlife and open-range livestock, use caution at driveways and side-road junctions, and carry ample water and reliable navigation.
