The Juniper Canyon segment extends between the junction of SR 188 and FR 71 (A-Cross/Greenback Valley Road) and the junction of FR 609 and FR 288 (Desert Saguaro to Tall Pines/Young Highway) in the Tonto National Forest. The alignment climbs from the Tonto Basin's Sonoran desert into the Sierra Ancha foothills, transitioning from saguaro-studded flats to juniper piñon and ponderosa pine, with views toward Roosevelt Lake, Tonto Creek, and the rugged Cherry Creek country.

This segment consists primarily of unpaved forest roads. FR 71 is generally easy graded dirt with occasional ruts/washboards; east of the divide, connectors to FR 609/FR 288 include rocky two-track and short steeper pitches. Conditions change quickly after storms; high-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended, especially near drainages and canyon rims.
