The Maverick West segment extends between the junction of FR 655 and FR 221A near the Clay Springs Trailhead and the junction of FR 9887J and FR 9887E in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests' Black Mesa/Lakeside country. The alignment works west and northwest across cinder benches and mixed piñon-juniper and ponderosa forest on the western reach of the Maverick/Timber Mesa OHV area, with broad views over the White Mountains plateau.
This segment consists primarily of unpaved forest roads and designated OHV connectors ranging from maintained cinder/dirt to rocky two-track, with intermittent ruts and washboards that worsen after summer storms. Expect occasional short, steeper pitches and embedded rock; high-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended, especially in wet conditions or after snowmelt.

Safety note
High-country weather shifts quickly. Summer monsoons can create slick cinder/mud and localized washouts; winter brings snow and ice. Cell coverage is inconsistent. Carry maps/GPS, extra water, and recovery gear, and check current Apache-Sitgreaves notices before travel.
