The Lone Pine Dam segment extends between the junction of SR 60 and FR 9427X near the Maverick Motorized Trail System near Show Low and the junction of FR 655 and FR 221A (Clay Springs Trailhead). The alignment works west across cinder flats and ponderosa country on the Timber Mesa/Porter Mountain uplands, skirts the Lone Pine Dam area on Show Low Creek, and continues toward Clay Springs with broad views over the White Mountains plateau. Notable points of interest include staging and connectors within the Maverick system (Sky-Hi, Timber Mesa, Panorama, Burton, Clay Springs trailheads), the Lone Pine Dam OHV area, and nearby lake corridors around Show Low.
This segment consists primarily of unpaved forest roads and designated OHV connectors ranging from maintained cinder/dirt to rocky two-track, with intermittent ruts and washboards that worsen after storms. Expect occasional short, steeper pitches and embedded rock; high-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended, particularly in wet conditions or after snowmelt. This segment contains a culvert under Hwy 60 that can fill with water, making the trail segment unusable — when this occurs, a detour is required (see the Arizona Alpine Trail website for details).

Safety note
High-country weather shifts quickly. Summer monsoons create slick cinder/mud and localized washouts; winter brings snow and ice. Cell coverage is inconsistent. Carry maps/GPS, extra water, and recovery gear, and check current Apache-Sitgreaves notices and local conditions before travel.
