The Black River segment extends between the Big Lake Recreation Area near the junction of SR 273 and FR 8037 and FR 25 and the Black River Bridge (Buffalo Crossing) along the east/west forks of the Black River in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The alignment descends from Big Lake's high country meadows and mixed conifer forest into a cool riparian canyon, with access to fishing spots, river overlooks, and connections to the Black River trail network (e.g., Thompson Trail #629).
This segment follows unpaved forest roads (including the Black River Road corridor) with generally graded dirt punctuated by rocky stretches, ruts, washboards, and a few steeper pitches; conditions can change quickly after storms. High clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended, especially during wet periods or snowmelt.

Amenities are concentrated at Big Lake (multiple campgrounds, boat access, seasonal concessions), with full services available in Eagar/Springerville to the northeast and Alpine to the southeast. Near the bridge, Buffalo Crossing Campground provides first come, first served campsites close to the River; additional water and services are available at nearby Big Lake campgrounds (e.g., Apache Trout, Rainbow).
Safety note
Expect rapidly changing high-elevation weather. Summer monsoons can create slick mud and washouts; winter brings snow and ice. Portions of the Black River corridor were affected by the 2011 Wallow Fire; watch for downed trees and debris. Cell coverage is limited; carry maps/GPS and be self-sufficient.
