The Milligan Valley segment extends between the junction of FR 851 and FR 275 on the east slopes of Escudilla Mountain and the junction of FR 85 and FR 285 (Water Canyon Road) near Eagar/Springerville in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The alignment crosses open prairies and mixed-conifer forest along the Milligan Valley and Mamie Creek drainages, with grand views of Escudilla Peak and the high meadows that lead north toward Water Canyon. Points of interest include a historic cabin site along Milligan Valley and the nearby Sipe Wildlife Area.

This segment consists primarily of unpaved forest roads ranging from graded dirt to rocky two-track with ruts and periodic washboards; high-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended. The trail is closed from Hwy 180/191 west to Water Canyon Road seasonally (typically January 1 – May 31). A detour is required during the closure period that requires drivers/riders to travel through Eagar.

Safety note

Expect rapid weather shifts at high elevation—summer monsoons can create mud and washouts, while late-spring snow and ice may linger along Water Canyon Road. Cell coverage is limited; carry maps/GPS and be self-sufficient.
