The Carnero Lake segment extends between the junction of FR 117 and FR 117A and the intersection of FR 61 and FR 2 near Carnero Lake and Greens Peak in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The alignment follows high-elevation cinder and forest roads through ponderosa and aspen groves on the Springerville Volcanic Field, with broad views toward Greens Peak and easy spur access to Carnero Lake. Notable points of interest include the Carnero Lake shoreline area (via FR 117/FR 117A) and Greens Peak.
This segment consists primarily of maintained cinder/dirt on FR 117 and graded forest roads (FR 61/FR 2), with occasional rocky and rough stretches, ruts, and seasonal washboards after storms. In dry weather these roads are generally easy; side spurs may require more clearance. High-clearance 4WD/OHV is recommended if conditions are wet or after snowmelt.

Safety note
Expect high-elevation weather swings (~9,000 ft): summer monsoons can create slick cinder/mud and localized washouts; winter brings snow/ice and seasonal closures—Carnero Lake access roads are typically closed mid November through mid April. Cell service is limited; carry maps/GPS and travel self-sufficient.
